In the three years since moving to Saltdean, David Wilson has helped to transform the village for everyone, earning lots of love in the process.

David started by clearing away dirt and litter from local footpaths, then had a bright idea. Why not create an eye-catching mural in the tunnel leading to Saltdean Beach? After approaching local councillor, Bridget Fishleigh, a successful crowd-funding campaign was launched to raise money for the project.

Next, two Brighton-based artists were hired to create the new mural. Inspired by his severely autistic stepson Jack’s love of the sea, David suggested a marine-theme for the painting. Everyone agreed that this would be perfect for Saltdean.

David got involved with the mural every step of the way, helping to prepare the tunnel for its final transformation. And nowadays, every single person that passes through it is immersed in a stunning turquoise seascape. What’s more, new lights, a community notice board and a striking Art Deco ‘Welcome To Saltdean’ sign have also been added.

David then got volunteers to help him paint railings, repair benches and generally spruce up the whole area around Saltdean Beach. He didn’t stop there though, he got to work transforming the rundown toilets near the Whitecliffs Cafe and in the Saltdean Oval Park.

When David’s stepson Jack finally saw the mural, he was delighted. And while David never looks for thanks or attention, he has become a valued volunteer in Saltdean, known by locals as simply ‘The Tunnel Man’.
